Surviving A Work From Home Setup With The New Telecommuting Act

July 15, 2018

Recently the House has given a go signal to give the Telecommuting Act a third and final reading. Once approved, this will enable employees from the private sector to work from outside their office. The Telecommuting Act also aims to address the worsening traffic condition and unpredictable weather conditions in Metro Manila.

Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte - the principal author of this bill did a good job with hitting several birds with one stone.

I already have this work from home benefit at work so this thing isn't foreign to me. But, for other parents who aren't used to working at home or telecommuting - they might feel intimidated, weird, and less productive at first. Let's face it, there are a lot of distractions at home and not everyone can afford to have a home office.

So, how could you survive the work from home setup with the new telecommuting act? Here 6 surefire ways to get the job done:

1. Take a bath

We've all had those 'no-ligo' days on the weekends. There's no work, nobody's going to see you, it's raining outside and it's just good to stay in bed all day. But, you have to remember that you're still practically going to work.

You're not physically at the office but, you need to get in the mood for it. Taking a bath will also give you the boost you need. It helps you get energized and pumped for the day's work. Do yourself (and your family) a favor and take a bath.

2. Make yourself up and dress appropriately

I don't mean to wear office clothes but, wear something nice and put together. This signals your brain that you are about to work. Just like taking a bath, this will help you get in the mood and boost your productivity. For moms, you can put on a bit of makeup just to make yourself presentable in case your boss makes an emergency video call.

3. Get physical

You're probably going to have access to a lot of junk foods when you're at home and this may lead to a very poor diet. I know that looking after the kids while working can be very tiring and sometimes eating food is the only way to make you feel better - but, you should know that this will give you problems in the long run.

You don't necessarily need to go to the gym. Just try and do some physical activities like a 15-minute walk in the morning or do that 5-minute workout routine from that app you've downloaded 6-months ago. The adrenaline you feel after doing a physical activity will surely lift your mood and prepare you for a productive work from home day!

4. Take time to learn a skill or a hobby

You're definitely going to have some free time with this new telecommuting act. And rather than scroll senseless on social media why not learn a skill or pick up a new hobby.

When I work from home, I work faster and I'm more efficient. This kind of attitude gives me extra time to work on my passion project like this blog or take online courses.

This telecommuting act is a game changer and we should take advantage of it. Do something great once in a while, explore and take time to learn new things. Things you aren't able to do when you're chained to your office desk.

5. Start Journaling

Write things down and develop a habit of gratuity. I started journaling about a year ago and it has given me a different outlook on life. Yes, I still have moments of insecurity but, overall I'm doing great.

I'm now thankful for a lot of things in my life. I'm more confident in myself and I'm selective of the people I surround myself with. I have a better understanding of who I am exactly. This kind of behavior is what you need as parents so, you can raise kids that are confident and self-reliant.

You don't have to write a lot of things, you can just start by writing about the three things you are grateful for every morning. Do this for a month and see how your outlook on life will change for the better.

6. Strengthen relationships

Ultimately, this telecommuting act is all about fostering stronger and better relationships. You get to spend more time with family rather than in traffic. You are able to spend time with friends without the fear of losing your job. You get to experience a richer life while working on your career.

Relationships are the building blocks of a happy life. And if we all take time to work on the relationships we have, we can all be more fulfilled and successful in our life. Fame and fortune shouldn't be your goal in life but, relationships that are impactful and passionate.
